Welcome to the Makarewa Road Safety Council page....
Harry, Ethan, Symone, Nickayla, Tegan and Sarah are the Road Safety Councillors @ Makarewa school.
These young leaders at the school, prioritised a focus on safe and responsible riders for Term 3 - and felt that such things as helmet safety, hazards, rules and personal safety need to become important teaching points.
The council are also very keen to run a 'Safety Slogan' competition, open to all students and their families. This will be sent home with the school newsletter, and the students will collate the responses. The winning slogans will be screen printed (funded by Jane) and placed on the school noticeboard where 1000's of cars pass daily. What a fabulous opportunity for the road safety council to show the wider community that Makarewa school is a RoadSense school!
The highly visible noticeboard.
Speed past the school on State Highway 6 is the biggest concern for staff, students and BOT, and has been investigated by NZ Police, Road Safety Southland and the Invercargill City Council. Installation of flashing warning lights is currently being explored, but until then the school remains proactive in getting the message of slowing down near the school, out to all motorists.
